"That's the point," he said. "You can't just buy it over the counter. You got to be introduced." He took her wrist with surprising strength, bending over her, breathing his sour prison smell at her. "You wouldn't be kidding me, would you?"

"This is just as important to me as it is to you," Ruth said.

He threw her wrist away from him. "Then come on. It ain't far. Ill get a buddy of mine to go in with you. The big pusher there they call Hoppy. Don't approach him, let him approach you." Suddenly he looked at the bright side of things and was overflowing with optimism. "Hell, it's going to be easy. You don't look like a pigeon."

"Thanks."

"I mean, a good stoolie, you don't notice him in a crowd."

Examining Ruth, he saw how she did look, and put his hand on her leg. He was still trembhng, and the impulses that came from his fingertips made it seem that he was trying to send her a message in code.

She put his hand aside. His mind had already moved on to somethmg else. He chattered steadily going down the stairs and along the street, walking so rapidly in his bobbing, swaying gait that Ruth had trouble keeping up.

"Give him what he asks for it, in little bills or silver if you've got it. Don't look anxious. But remember that while you're in there enjoying the music, I'm outside dying."

"How much will you need?"

"Six caps anyway, tiirough tomorrow night. With Greco out of the way, things ought to open up again."

He left her abruptly and plunged into a candy store. He came back, dragging a dark man with a mustache.

"Shut up, Eddie," Einar said. "We can't talk in there."

"We can't talk out here either," the man said. "And that's final. I take a risk and get Hoppy to sell me a Uttle more the last month. One a day I can fix you up with, to put you straight, but that's my limit."

"I been paying good for it!"

"You pay for the risk. Anything more than the one, I can't do it. They'U notice Fve upped my buy and put two and two together. Who's this?"

"My cousm," Einar said. "Listen, Eddie—"

"You hsten. All I am is a little bondsman. I don't want a thing out of that mob but they give me a httle bonding
